Why do I Keep Writing This Blog?

Oh… why do I keep writing on this blog? There is usually no more than 200 people visiting my blog on any given day. And it does not look like they return to pay an additional visit. Most of the visits come from links I have places in some comment somewhere to clarify a position. Many of them are even contrived. The revenue coming out of this blog is next to nothing. I make more in 10 minutes going to work than I make in an entire month through this blog. In fact, I don’t personally know anyone who writes a blog for profit. And yet I keep going on and on writing article after article on mundane topics.

The only two articles that consistently get reviewed through organic search are the connection time out solution and the comparison between iPhone5 and 4S. So why do I do it? Well I have a reason. I have a very good reason. It is because I want to eventually grow this blog or some other blog into a money-making machine that passively brings in some income for a while. I know this can happen although I have not had it happen with a blog before. I know many people have tried and failed, but I did create a passive income stream with the iPhone apps that I made. To get there with a blog, I know I need to write good quality articles. Therein lies the answer to why I keep writing.

I have learned that to do anything well easily and consistently, I need to practice. There is no better way to get things right the “first” time. Just like learning to walk, bike, swim, talk, and shop; practice is what will help me write better too. I know I make a lot of mistakes and show my ignorance (because I am ignorant) in many areas. I am willing to accept the ridicule because that is who I am. I may not be better than many others, but I am going to keep trying to write better than I write.

I know there is no easy way to make loads of money. It always requires a lot of work. Strategically allocating my energies to the right kind of work is what makes the difference in how much I make in a certain venture. Not only work, but risk as well. There were many opportunities where I could have taken more risks and they would have paid off. But I did not take them because the comfort of staying safe was worth avoiding the risk. At the time, the risk did not justify losing what I had. I am that kind of person. But I will take small risks because I only want small rewards.

This blog is one place where I have been consistent for over a year now. Two or three months ago I decided to make videos for YouTube, but thus far I have produced less than a handful. That is not good. That does not show determination. But I have not given up. I will make the videos and I will post them on a blog.

Late last month I decided to try my hand at publishing a book on the iBookStore. That is the new market I want to tap. Writing a book is hard, especially if you have to write it from scratch. But why write from scratch, if I already have a whole bunch of stuff I have written. That’s right, I took most of my blog posts from last year and put it in a book. I am publishing via lulu.com. This one is an experiment. I don’t expect to make any money out of it. But I wanted to get my feet wet. The next project is to publish it directly on the iBook Store. I have created an account on iTunesConnect. I have talked with Apple Support to get some answers clarified. I’m pretty confident that I will publish another book directly in March. I have a feeling that it will be free. It will be related to tornadoes.

Yup.
