Microsoft has announced that Windows 8 will not be backward compatible with most older phones. This will immediately raise a stink with people clamoring for Windows 8 on their old phones.
I side with Microsoft. They don’t have to bend over backwards trying to make it compatible. Most phone last about two years. After that they are worthless. At the same time software advances and hardware advances make the older phones untenable against newer software. If the new OS does run on the older machines/phones, the performance will be so pathetic, it won’t even be laughable.
People have no complaints when Apple’s iOS versions don’t run on phones that are two years old. Even the supported iPhones run the newer OSes slowly. So it is actually good that newer OSes don’t support older phones. It also makes it easier for the software developers to start deprecating APIs that don’t make sense anymore.
Phone makers should in fact be happy about this decision because they can now sell more phones.
If you are upgrading to a new phone, please recycle responsibly.
