Macbook Air as a spare battery.

I’m on my way to SF. Just as I was leaving I noticed that the charge left on my phone was less than 20%. I plan to be out for about 5 hours. The battery will not last that long. I am always close to an outlet or other charging station, so I never purchased a second battery that the phone can feed off of.

On the Bart, there are no power sockets. So what do I do? I pick up my Macbook Air. It is just as big as a magazine and I had fully charged it last night. In the last 20 minutes my phone has already charged to 40+%. By the time I get off at Embarcadero, it will have enough charge to last me well through the next five hours and more.

Thankfully(?), there is no wireless on the Bart – a shame. So I cannot browse. So I can blog in a text editor, which is now Sublime Text 2. This is the best text editor invented by man.

How I came to charge the MBA to full

My MBA had run out of charge last night. I was programming from about 10PM to 2AM sitting through two movies on Netflix while coding. Around the same time as I had finished coding, the “only 5% battery left” warning had popped up. Since I had finished coding, I had not given much thought to it. I was going to finish soon, and the second movie had just ended.

I merged my branch with master. I saw my master was three commits behind. So I pulled from the origin and merged. Then I went to Amazon and tried to pull the code. I had earlier made a change to the welcome page, warning people that this was not yet in production – because people were starting to sign up. (I wonder if Google Adwords had any impact since that that went live last week. It is unlikley since I only set it to show for 5 cents when the competition had 2 dollars. I cannot check now because I am on the Bart. But I digress.) Since there was a conflict on the welcome page I had to resolve that. Then I saw another conflict which I don’t remember creating (I am becoming forgetful as I age…). I resolved that, pulled, merged, made sure the website was up.

By now I had forgotten about the battery. With all my work done for the night, I started typing exit on the AWS server. I only got to type ‘e’ and the computer died on me. That is how I ended up charging the MBA overnight :) .

I have a macbook air for school that needs to be fully charged everyday. I forgot to charge it last night, and it was at 34% this morning. It was 6:30 and I have to leave at 7:00. What do I do if this happens again?

@iloveskittles You could do one or more of several things. Obviously, connect it right away. Even 30 minutes of charging in the morning will easily bring up the charge quite a bit.

When you are ready to leave, take the charger with you. When you get to class pick a seat near an outlet and charge the laptop then.

If you forget to take a charger with you and you are running low, when you are in class, just raise your hand and ask if anyone has a charger. It is very likely someone has one. Failing all that, go to the nearest starbucks.. there will be someone who has a well charged MB or MBA who will be willing to share the charger for a while.

      Hope that helps.

The battery in your MacBook Air is a consumable item, which means it will require replacement at the end of its useful life.   A replacement battery can be purchased directly from Apple.
