You have all undoubtedly seen and heard people wax poetic about how to live your life as though every day was the last day of your life. Apparently, you will come to appreciate life with a new understanding, and live life to the fullest. Many people want to spend that day with their family – near and dear ones. Steven Covey said, and I paraphrase, “On your death bed you will not regret having spent less time at the office.”
But the fact is, for a person who lives to be 50 years old, they live a little over 18,000 days. A person who is 65 has lived over 23,000 days. Given 65 is the retirement age, 90+% of us will live to be 65. In fact life expectancy for a majority of us is over 75 years. Although, you will eventually die (and most people don’t do anything special on their last day), you do get to live around 25000 days on average. So there is a pretty high chance that you will not die today.
With that sort of odds, how would you live your life differently today, knowing that you will live to see another day or decade? That is the reality. You still need to maintain a good relationship with your family and friends – especially since you will be with them for the next decade or so
. Plus even when you die, your legacy continues (at least for a few years in most cases.)
